Rebuild Preparation

Introduction

This mini series is designed as preparation for Rebuild teams travelling out to South Africa or to Mexico to build houses alongside local pastors working with urban poor communities. However, these sessions together may be relevant to any cross–cultural team venture, or used separately they may be useful for exploring aspects of teamwork, culture, poverty, and lifestyle.

While Urban Saints and Amor Ministries have a Christian ethic, we do not insist that all young people who work with us are Christians. There may be some young people in your group who do not profess Christian faith. Nonetheless, values and principles given in scripture (which are used in these sessions) are sound and proven and so will be helpful in exploring these four themes for young people of all faiths and none.

During the four sessions there are several very interactive learning games. While these can easily be played with a group of ten to fifteen or more, I’m aware that many groups may have only a few members. Hence, where possible I’ve included a note entitled “Not enough players?” to show how the activity can be readily adapted for a smaller number.

Please note also that while the normal flow of a session is in the sequence “warm up | getting started | digging in | response”, there are some sessions where the activities naturally follow on from each other, so may not necessarily adhere to this sequence. You are advised to read through the whole session first before deciding on which activities to choose, and in which sequence to do them.

It will be useful for the group to have a location (a corner, a wall) where they can record their thoughts and feelings and prayers, and ensure these will be undisturbed until they return home.

For any logistical or technical aspects of your group’s trip preparation (flights, visas, vaccinations, kit, etc.), please refer to the Rebuild Handbook.
