Session CCh01: Trust Up
Age group: 11-14
Series: Christian Character
Theme: Trust (Christian Character)
Total duration: mins
The aim of this session will be to look at the issue of trust in society. To look at what it is and see if there is a Biblical model for it.
Bible references: Exodus 14:21-31; 19:9, Psalm 115, Amos 5:10-15, Micah 7:1-7, Luke 16:1-12
Are you a doormat? That is, does everyone take advantage and wipe their feet on you? Or a door keeper? Nothing gets past you.
Are you reliable? Everything you say you will do you do do. Or do you leave everyone in the do dos?
If we want to answer the question “How trustworthy is my society?” then we first need to look to ourselves. We cannot easily change others if they do not wish to change; we can change ourselves. If we try to change others without changing ourselves we will, quite rightly, be labelled as hypocrites.
The first word of the Chambers Dictionary definition of faith is trust. The definition of trust however commences, ‘A firm belief that a person or thing can be relied upon.'
There is therefore a slightly confusing etymology to the word trust - an older and more aristocratic English will use the word trust in place of hope, as in ‘ I trust I find you well this morning.'
In this session we will assume there is a lot of common ground between faith and trust. We will be concentrating on the human aspect – putting faith and trust in each other. Putting faith in God is the subject of several other sessions.
The Biblical material will look at incidents that led to people trusting in God's servants rather, or as well as, in God himself.
We will also assume that there is such a thing as society. We will mean individuals living and acting together.
