Session CCh01: Who can you trust?
Age group: 7-10
Series: Christian Character
Theme: Trust (Christian Character)
Total duration: mins
This session aims to help group members to look at the issue of Trusting in others and ultimately trusting in God.
Bible references: 2 Corinthians 1:8-9, 1 Timothy 6:17, Psalm 119:42b, Psalm 13:5, Psalm 52:8, Psalm 56:3, Proverbs 3:5, Luke 6, 2 Kings 5
If we are honest, most of us allow ourselves to get into some sort of trouble before we question whether or not we truly trust in God.
We may go to bed at night wondering if we can cover our bills, or fretting that a relationship has gone wrong. We choose to worry rather than to trust. It is in our nature as humans to do so.
The fact that we have the promise that we will never lack anything we need is sometimes forgotten. The fact that God has guided us through difficult circumstances is not what we remember. How often have we walked through a day with dread and anxiety wondering if everything would turn out alright after all? The fact that our Father has miraculously met our needs time and time again can begin to seem like nothing more than a distant memory.
To trust in God is not a noble way of living meant simply for the religious or super holy amongst us – just for those people we envy in our church who seem to advise God in their spare time. Trust is a way of life for each of us who say we are Christians. Not an optional ‘bolt-on' or a nice fluffy Sunday school idea. It is essential for our growth and maturity as the people of God.
But conversely, unless we also become like little children looking to our daddy for his help, provision, guidance and solutions we are not going to live ‘trustingly' in the way he has planned for us. We will not be aware of all of his blessings and the truths of his promises.
When I was a little girl, I can remember going for a long walk up a mountain with my family. For the first part of the journey I scampered up the hill and ran on ahead with my brothers, enjoying the fresh air and the freedom. But I soon became very weary and tired. I started to struggle to keep going. My Dad came up behind me and put his hand in the small of my back. As I leant backwards on him, his strength and weight pushed me forwards. We reached the top together and I felt on top of the world.
Proverbs 3:5 encourages us not to lean on our own understanding but to lean back on God, to trust in him with all of our hearts, all of our weight.
If we trust in the Lord in the first place, we are spiritually prepared for what happens to us. Think now of someone you know who is good at trusting God. What is it about this person that you admire? How do you think they have learnt to trust? What sort of issues in your life do you find it hard to leave with the Lord? Why do you think this is?
Pray now that the group understands this as they go through this session on trust with you. Name each member of the group now before the Lord and ask for his blessing and provision for each of them.
